About

This site is for information related to the trail system in the area around Sitka, Alaska. Initially it consists entirely of trails accessible by road in Sitka, but will eventually expand to include other trails in the general area.

  1. Matt,

Great site. This is a tremendous resource for Sitka residents and visitors wanting to explore our environs. I’ve posted a couple of links to your site in the online forum for Sitka’s Bicycle Friendly Community project, so hopefully a few more people will be able to enjoy your work. The link to the project is http://www.sitkaaoc.org/Projects/BikeFriendly/bicycle.html and then look for the online forum button.

Something that might make this even better is a link that sorted out the various allowed transit modes for each trail, for example, some trails are pedestrian only, while others are multi-use and allow bicycles (or even horses if we had any in town and motorized transport). That way, people wouldn’t have to click every trail link to figure out which ones were mountain bike friendly.

Thanks for all the work. Hope you had fun exploring.

  2. Thanks for the suggestions. I’m still working on the organization and navigation possibilities, and I think it’s a good idea to have a classification of trails by accessibility and/or allowed transit modes. Thanks for the links.

Also, feel free to leave comments on trails pages, as I’m hoping that people who get out on the trails leave comments with their thoughts/experiences.

  3. This is absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing these experiences.
I am finishing my forestry tech. and will be heading that way in 1.5 years!
    Peace and love

  4. All,

We’ve created a new Sitka Cycling Showcase photo page on Flickr, to help celebrate cycling in Sitka as we pursue a Bicycle Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists. Feel free to post photos of cycling around Sitka in the group pool on the new site, http://www.flickr.com/groups/sitkacyclingshowcase/. We’d love to have some photos from the various trails around town. To learn more about the Bicycle Friendly Community project and other health and wellness projects around Sitka, go to http://www.sitkaaoc.org or http://www.sitkahealthsummit.org.

This is a great blog Matt’s put together and everytime I show it to people they’re blown away by all the detail work Matt’s done getting the word out about Sitka’s trails.

    Thanks,
